Monday, June 3rd 1-3:30 pm, “Mansion Row” by History Center’s Jenny Thielman: Jenny

Thielman will delve into the captivating tale of the area adjacent to downtown Cedar Rapid, once dubbed

“Mansion Hill” along Third, Second, and First Avenues SE, were stately residences once stood; the Galena of Eastern Iowa. Today, the History Center proudly resides within one of the few surviving homes. Jenny will unravel the narrative of how this picturesque neighborhood was transformed into “Auto Row” in the wake of the arrival of the Lincoln Highway in 1913. Many “Auto Row” structures survive today. Jenny will include updates on the evolution of the area continues with the expanding MedQuarter District. Don’t miss this opportunity to learn about the captivating history and transformation of Mansion Row/Auto Row.


Thursday, June 6th 1-3:30 pm, Bingo: A social game of chance, bingo, is growing in popularity and is

enjoyed by people of all ages. Besides being great recreation, playing bingo help older adults maintain hand-eye coordination, concentration, and short-term memory skills.


Monday, June 10th 1-3:30 pm, CR Parks & Rec’s Opportunities for Seniors by Barbara

Penning: Barbara Penning will share CR Parks and Rec’s programs of interest to older adults, including the vibrant new offerings of Friend at Jones Park Lodge. Delve into a treasure trove of information as Barbara shares insights on a plethora of programs, including the charming ambiance of Ushers Ferry, engaging programs at NW Rec Center, swimming and water aerobics at Bender Pool, and the ever-popular sport of pickleball, along with opportunities to learn and grow in the game. Moreover, Barbara will unveil hidden gems within our parks, highlighting serene havens like the enchanting flower gardens at Noelridge, the bustling community hub of the Farmers Market at Bever Park, and the invigorating Fit Lot nestled within Jones Park. Join us as we connect, engage, and thrive together in our vibrant community spaces.


Thursday, June 13th 1-3:30 pm, From Dubuque to Selma & Beyond by author Dave

Markward: Embark on a transformative journey with former Cedar Rapids Community School

Superintendent Dave Markward as he shares his transition from an upbringing in an almost exclusively white community to a life enriched by diversity in his latest book, *From Dubuque to Selma and Beyond: My Journey to Understand Racism in America.*


Intertwining his personal growth with significant historical events and figures, Dave delves into the heart of America’s racial divides. Through thought-provoking questions, Dave challenges us to assess our own understanding of racism and our progress to understand and value diversity. His heartfelt narration and candid reflections on his experiences make this journey relatable, inspiring, and deeply enlightening.


Monday, June 17th 1-3:30 pm, Line Dancing with Kathie Mosley: Line dancing is a great way for older adults to engage in healthy physical activity. It is a perfect exercise for improving coordination and balance, increasing cardiovascular health and brain memory. This dance fitness experience can be enjoyed by people of all movement abilities; newcomers welcomed anytime. Kathie

Mosley will be leading us in this quirky and fun activity.


Tuesday, June 18th, Carpool Trip to Matchstick Marvels Museum, Gladbrook, with stop for

lunch at historic Youngsville Café: We'll kick off our adventure at 10:15 am, meeting at the parking lot

where Bridge to Opportunities gathers, located at 2100 1st Ave. NE. Peg and Pat will chauffeur up to six

additional passengers. If we have more eager participants, we'll need an extra set of wheels, so don't hesitate to step up! More information and opportunity to sign up will be provided at Bridge to Opportunities programs or by calling 319-640-5357.


The historic Youngsville Café, Watkins, IA, was an early gas station along the iconic Lincoln Highway. At the captivating Matchstick Marvels Museum in Gladbrook, you will be astounded by over 20 intricate creations crafted entirely from wooden matchsticks by the talented resident, Pat Acton. Among the recreations are the Mars Rover, a Brontosaurus Dinosaur, Harry Potter’s Hogwarts,and the US Capital.


Thursday, June 20th 1-3:30 pm, Senior Living Options and Hospice Care: Join Brian Kramer, a

Monday, June 24th 1-3:30 pm, Game Day: Join us to play Phase 10 (a rummy-like card game), Mexican Trains (a version of Dominos), or Scrabble. These games can be played by anyone. Or bring a favorite game. There is enough room and tables to play 3-5 games.


Thursday, June 27th 1-3:30 pm, Movie Day at Horizons 819 5 th St SE: Come and enjoy a movie while munching on gourmet popcorn for your cinematic pleasure. The name of the selected movie will be posted on the Facebook Group “Cedar Rapids 55 Plus” and announced about a week prior to “Movie Day.” This offsite event will be held at Horizons, 819 5th St SE, ½ block off 8th Ave, not far from Mercy Hospital.
